Occupational segregation is the distribution and concentration of men and women in different kinds of jobs/occupations (horizontal segregation) or at different levels/grades (vertical segregation). It is widely accepted as an indicator of inequality, being a barrier that prevents both men and women from fulfilling their potential in the labour market and narrowing the recruitment pool available to employers. Occupational segregation impacts on social cohesion as well as economic performance, and therefore is a key issue that must be addressed.
This research explores the nature and extent of occupational segregation across and within the Highlands and Islands, and identifies barriers to equal participation in the economy. In addition to the regional report and executive summary, six individual reports are available to provide an overview of occupational segregation in each of the local authority areas within the Highlands and Islands.
