HIE is the economic and community development agency for an area covering more than half of Scotland’s land mass, stretching from Shetland in the north to the southern tip of Argyll, and including all of the country’s 94 inhabited islands.
Operating in line with Scottish Government priorities, HIE has a clear vision for sustainable and inclusive economic growth in every part of the Highlands and Islands. Our current priorities and planned activities can be found in our five-year Strategy and annual Operating Plan.
While these are challenging times for economies all over the world, we recognise the exceptional opportunities that exist here as drivers of growth, prosperity and fair work for the Highlands and Islands and for Scotland. Currently, these include the tremendous potential of renewable energy, the blue economy, space, life sciences and the region’s natural capital, along with long-established sectors such as tourism, creative industries and food and drink.
Watch our sixtieth anniversary video, produced in November 2025, for an overview of HIE's role in economic and community development across the Highlands and Islands.
