Drones and Robotics in the Highlands and Islands

This study, commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, considers aerial drones, uncrewed surface and underwater systems, and, more selectively, ground-based robotics. It explores how the Oban and Lorna area can capitalise on current and emerging opportunities, what is needed to support growth, and how the region more broadly can position itself as a leading location for the development, testing and commercialisation of uncrewed systems and related robotics.

The study is set in the wider Highlands and Islands context, while giving specific attention to Argyll and the Islands and specifically Oban and North Lorn, including the interplay between local assets, sectoral strengths, infrastructure, skills, and policy support. It recognises that other parts of the region, notably Orkney, are also progressing related activity, with some points of overlap. This creates synergies which add to rather than detract from the overall regional proposition.

The research was undertaken by Reid Consulting and the Diffley Partnership. It involved desk-based review, stakeholder consultations and an online survey of businesses and organisations using, or interested in using, drones and robotics.
