Cairngorm Mountain launches trial to explore controlled summit access for funicular visitors
Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Limited (CMSL) has announced the launch of the Cairn Gorm Summit Access Trial, an initiative designed to explore controlled, un-guided access from the mountain railway’s top station directly to the Cairn Gorm summit.
With permission to run until November 30 2026, the trial will use GPS tracking technology to gather data on visitor movement, paving the way for potential future updates to the resort’s long-standing Visitor Management Plan (VMP).
Under current planning conditions established in 2001 (Section 50 of the Town and Country Planning Act), a “closed system” prevents funicular passengers from exiting the top station outside of the snowsports season. This rule was established to protect delicate, internationally designated European conservation sites nearby, home to sensitive wildlife species such as dotterel and ptarmigan.
The new trial offers visitors an opportunity to experience un-guided summit access while helping stakeholders collect insight into how people navigate the mountain's path network.
Key highlights of the trial:
Real-Time GPS Tracking: Participants will carry GPS tracking handsets that log real-time movement data to evaluate path adherence and ensure visitors remain within the designated Ski Area boundary.
Conservation-Focused: Data collected will inform discussions between CMSL and Section 50 stakeholders - including The Highland Council and NatureScot, as well as Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and the Cairngorms National Park Authority - to test whether wider non-skiing access can be balanced with environmental protection.
Safety & Monitoring: Handsets double as a one-way communication channel. In the event of inclement weather or if a participant crosses outside the approved zone, automatic notifications will alert the user and resort rangers.

The trial is being undertaken with careful consideration for the environment and the condition of the mountain, with the evidence gathered helping to inform our approach to access in the future.”
How to Participate:
Booking: Slots must be booked online in advance via the Cairngorm Mountain webshop. Space is limited per time slot based on device availability.
Pricing & Deposits: Participants purchase a specific Walk Trial Funicular Ticket alongside a £5 booking fee per device. A refundable deposit is collected at check-in and returned upon the device’s safe return.
Requirements: Adult participants (18+) must carry an individual tracker (with the exception of families where one tracker per group is required). Participants are urged to dress appropriately with sturdy hiking boots and waterproof layers. Dogs are not permitted on the trial, and access remains subject to weather conditions assessed daily by the Duty Ranger.
