Sumburgh-based Ness Engineering is building a new facility on its existing site as it responds to growing demand for its services and plans for the next stage of development.

The company has secured up to £172,234 of funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to support the capital expansion and the creation of new jobs.

The firm delivers a broad range of skilled engineering services including electrical, mechanical and general engineering, alongside site services such as welfare units, temporary lighting and on-site power generation. It currently employs 46 people, including apprentices across Shetland.

By consolidating operations, the new building will provide additional workshop, storage and yard space to support the company’s growing plant, equipment and welfare unit fleet, while freeing up existing buildings for improved office accommodation. As a direct result of the expansion, the business can further grow key areas of activity, creating a new role and apprentices position.

Alongside the physical expansion, the company has also received £18,580 in HIE support to invest in a new technology solution that will improve productivity and efficiencies within the business, helping to manage a growing volume of administrative tasks. The software will integrate seamlessly with the company’s existing accountancy system.

Katrina Wiseman, area manager for HIE’s Shetland and Orkney area team, said:

“Ness Engineering, headquartered in the south end, plays an important role in the local economy, providing skilled jobs and essential services across Shetland. This investment will increase the firm’s capacity, create employment opportunities and improve productivity, helping to strengthen and future-proof the business.”

Alistair Leslie, managing director of Ness Engineering, said:

“We’re very grateful for the support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which has helped us invest in the future of Ness Engineering and strengthen our operations here in Shetland.

“The new workshop and yard facilities will give us the additional space and capacity we need to support growing demand for our services, while also improving efficiency across the business. Importantly, this investment allows us to create new employment opportunities locally, including another two apprenticeship roles, which is something we’re particularly proud of.

“The additional support towards new software systems has helped streamline our administrative processes and improve productivity, allowing staff to focus more time on higher-value tasks and supporting customers.”
