Digital and AI innovation round-up for November

Scotland’s digital future is accelerating, with AI and tech innovation transforming businesses. In this blog, HIE’s Theresa Swayne shares November insights on funding, leadership, and how organisations can harness technology to stay ahead.

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of inspiration, collaboration and progress for Scotland’s tech and innovation community. Reflecting on my recent experiences, including judging at the Scottish Women in Technology (SWiT) Awards, attending the Ecosystem Exchange in Edinburgh and supporting the National AI Adoption Programme, I feel optimistic for the future. 

The Ecosystem Exchange is a two-day conference designed for people who build and support entrepreneurial networks such as founders, investors, academics, and policymakers. The most recent event took place on 13–14 November at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and focused on strengthening the UK’s innovation landscape.

Judging the Scottish Women in Technology Awards 

It was a privilege to serve as a judge for the 2025 SWiT Awards, which continue to shine a spotlight on the incredible talent, leadership, and allyship driving diversity and inclusion across Scotland’s tech industry. This year’s ceremony was a celebration of action and achievement, with over 300 entries - the most in the awards’ history. The finalists and winners, from rising stars to seasoned leaders, exemplify the spirit of innovation and resilience that defines our community.
Congratulations to all who were recognised and a thank you to my fellow judges and the SWiT Board for championing progress in tech. I am left thinking there is still a job to do to support women in technology in the Highlands and Islands.  See the full list of winners and learn more about the awards. 

Ecosystem Exchange Edinburgh: building the future together 

Attending the Ecosystem Exchange at the Edinburgh Futures Institute was a real highlight. The discussions focused on supporting AI-native startups, rethinking university-led innovation and aligning national tech strategy with practical needs. Inspiring speakers such as Ana Stewart (Scottish Government), Rob Kenedi (Decelerator), and Elizabeth Scott (Turing Innovation Catalyst) challenged us to think bigger and collaborate more effectively. The energy in the room was palpable and the conversations underscored the importance of coordination, storytelling and a shared ambition to see the Scottish tech sector thrive.

National AI Adoption Programme 

Back at the office, it's been a busy few weeks working with colleagues from Scottish Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise, The Data Lab and the Scottish AI Alliance to  deliver the National AI Adoption Programme. Supported by the Scottish Government, the programme helps businesses, especially SMEs and rural enterprises, access the funding, expertise and support they need to adopt AI technologies. The programme includes mentoring support, grant funding and a series of learning journeys and roadshows. While HIE's AI Mentoring and AI Exploration vouchers are now closed to new enquiries, the following opportunities remain open: 

AI Learning Journeys - In February 2026, two AI International Leadership Learning Journeys will take senior business leaders to London and France. These immersive experiences are designed to accelerate AI capability and strategic leadership, offering real-world insights and international connections. Find out more and apply. 

The Rural AI Roadshow - The Rural AI Roadshow is taking place in Inverness, Dundee, and Gretna in January 2026  It will bring together rural business leaders, innovators and policymakers to explore how AI can drive inclusive and sustainable growth in rural Scotland. With keynotes, breakouts on accessibility, inclusion and skills, AI Readiness in Action, Entrepreneurship and panel discussions, hands-on workshops and exciting AI demonstrations amongst plenty of networking opportunities. Looking Ahead 

With the momentum from these events and initiatives, I'm optimistic about our role in shaping the region's future in technology and AI. The commitment to diversity, collaboration and practical innovation in Scotland is clear and together we’re building an environment where everyone can thrive.
