Making the most of academic linkages through Co-Innovate

Renewable Parts is a supplier of new and refurbished turbine parts to the global wind energy sector. End of life or damaged parts are refurbished to a new standard, giving them a second lease of life and preventing waste. The business employs eight staff in Lochgilphead in Argyll. They are passionate about the circular economy with a strong vision of how to make the industry greener.

To deliver this innovative business model, the company employs eight staff in Lochgilphead in Argyll where refurbishment operations are located.

The business is on a growth trajectory which has seen them start work on the build of a new Refurbishment and Innovation centre, four times the size of their current premises. It will increase their capacity to serve a growing customer base and allow continued product innovation.

R&D key to unlocking business growth

Research and development is now the key to business growth and allowing expansion of the range of parts that can be refurbished to a high standard.

Understanding the value of collaboration, Renewable Parts has recently embarked upon a 12-month R&D project in partnership with Trinity College Dublin, made possible by funding from the Co-Innovate programme.

Co-Innovate – delivered in the Highlands and Islands by HIE – is supported by the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme and is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

In addition to advice and mentoring, Co-Innovate provides grant funding for businesses in Argyll and the West Highlands and Islands to carry out a 12-month R&D project in collaboration with an academic from the Republic of Ireland.

This grant will support Renewable Parts to work with Dr Daniel Trimble, Assistant Professor of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Biomedical Engineering at Trinity College, to develop processes to test and quality assure refurbished parts. The grant will also part-fund an engineer to work within the business to lead the project.

R&D is a core part of our Refurbishment & Innovation Centre, enabling us to anticipate customers’ needs longer term. Co-innovate funding is vital to our expansion investment & we’re excited about what we can achieve together.
