Destination Leaders Programme

Find out more about Tourism Leadership and how developing your role as a tourism leader can build your knowledge, expertise and networks, influence your business and your destination.

What it is?

The Destination Leaders Programme is a six-month part-time CPD course which enables you to come together with likeminded individuals to learn more about leadership within your own organisation and/or within your destination. 

By taking part in this course, you will:

  • Improve your leadership skills and knowledge
  • Learn more about destination development and leadership
  • Consider your customer journey from start to finish
  • Understand market trends and drivers for sustainable growth
  • Identify your stakeholders and partners and how you can work collaboratively with others
  • Look at innovative ways to deliver new products, services and experience for market resilience

What's involved?

You'll take part in 12 one day workshops, which take place 2/3 weeks apart. Individuals must also participate in the Leadership project, which will be assessed. All 12 courses will be delivered from October 21 to March 22.

There will be three cohorts of delivery with a maximum of 25 participants. Cohorts will include a mix of tourism businesses from a geographical area across specific urban areas (Glasgow/Edinburgh and Dundee/Aberdeen) or pan-Scotland.

It is delivered by Edinburgh Napier University on behalf of the Scottish Government, HIE, South of Scotland Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise and Skills Development Scotland. It is fully funded as as part of the Scottish Tourism Leadership Programme. There will be a cost in terms of your time away from your business/organisation. Participants are expected to attend at least 80% of the programme.

Who can apply?

We're looking for talented individuals within tourism businesses and organisations across Scotland. You will currently have a key and active role in the business. Applicants must also have ambition, commitment and passion for developing themselves, their business and their destination, which must be demonstrated in the personal statement submitted with their application. Participation is based on an application process through Edinburgh Napier University.

The Destination Leadership course is part of the Scottish Tourism Leadership Programme. Funded by the Scottish Government, and delivered by a partnership of Scotland's enterprise agencies and Skills Development Scotland, its aim is to support leadership skills development, helping the sector recover from COVID-19.

As well as Destination Leaders, the programme also includes the Communities Leading in Tourism and Introduction to Tourism Leadership courses. 

We're building on the experience of the successful Destination Leaders Programme (DLP), Communities Leading in Tourism network, and Rural Leadership Programme (RLP) with exclusive access for participants to:

  • Tourism Leadership & Recovery Fund
