Fibre to the Premises

What is it?

Fibre to the Premises or Full Fibre

This means that your broadband service is delivered by fibre optic cables all the way from the exchange right to your door. It’s much faster than many other broadband services which make use of copper telephone lines.

It gives you the option to take very high speed packages of up to 1 Gbps, or you can choose from other standard fibre broadband packages offered by the provider.

In the Highlands and Islands, domestic level FTTP is available in a variety of locations:

  • The Highlands and Islands Digital project has made FTTP available to around 3,500 premises across the region. This is geographically widespread. It’s in larger locations like Elgin, Dunoon, Inverness and Wick; in island areas including Lewis, South Uist, Skye, Arran, Shetland and Orkney; and in a variety of communities including  Balmacara, Lochbroom, and Tobermory. It’s always worth checking your own details on the checker.
  • In addition to FTTP which was provided through the programme, there is additional coverage through the national Openreach network as they build more full fibre, and initiatives like the Local Full Fibre Network and the City Fibre roll out in Inverness, Fort William, Wick and Thurso.

Please note that fibre products for businesses including Ethernet, are available across the region. Providers and specialist communications companies can provide advice.

FTTP Internal

Installation

The process is slightly different to services which are delivered over your phone line. As the fibre has to be brought to your property an engineer will have to carry out an assessment before work can happen. Delivery could be straightforward if there is existing ducting, or more complicated if ducting needs to be dug in or run overhead.

You will also require a home visit as the internal set up is slightly different. Your provider will give you an appropriate router.

While they say it is unusual, Openreach may come back to you to discuss Excess Construction Costs prior to installation if work required breaches their standard installation costs.
