Year of Coasts and Waters 2020 - rolled into 2021

Due to COVID-19, this themed year has been rolled over into 2021 to support the tourism and events industry recover from the impacts of the current pandemic.

Take a look at some of the remarkable coasts and waters across our region.

What are Scotland's themed years?

Scotland’s Themed Years have been running since 2009 as a way to celebrate a particular side to Scotland. Some past examples of the celebratory years include the Year of Young People 2018, the Year of History Heritage and Archaeology 2017 and the Year of Innovation Architecture and Design 2016.

The Year of Coasts and Waters

2020 had been designated as a year in which Scotland’s Coasts and Waters would be showcased and celebrated with a programme of activity designed to support the nation’s tourism and events sectors before the arrival of COVID-19.

Due to the significant impact of COVID-19 across the sector, all stakeholder groups including the events and festivals sector, tourism businesses and partners aligned to the theme, there has been strong support to rollover the celebratory year into 2021 and focus on helping the sector recover.
