SCOTLAND’S INNOVATION CENTRES – HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS FOCUS

Businesses and communities in the Highlands and Islands now have direct local access to Scotland’s Innovation Centres through a collaboration between HIE, The Scottish Government, Scottish Funding Council and Scottish Enterprise.

THE DATA LAB INNOVATION CENTRE

The fourth Data Lab Hub in Scotland is now located in An Lòchran, Inverness, serving the region. The Data Lab has three key priorities: foster innovation through collaboration, build skills and grow talent, and champion Scotland’s data science community.

Highlands and Islands businesses interested in both driving more value from their existing data or looking to innovate using data can contact: The Data Lab Business Development Executive, Karen O’Hanlon here - karen.ohanlon@thedatalab.com

CENSIS INNOVATION CENTRE

In its simplest form, the Internet of Things is about connecting devices to the internet, and to each other. This includes everything from your FitBit or Nest thermostat in a domestic context, to industrial IoT used to enhance manufacturing or make improvements in areas such as asset management or maintenance. Benefits might include:

• Maximising customer experience with timely, tailored information
• Opportunities for businesses through better intelligence using real time information and understanding trends or patterns
• Adhering to requirements or regulations through using data
in an affordable or time saving way
• Condition monitoring of equipment and infrastructure
even in remote areas
• Improving the health and safety of an operational environment through being able to monitor conditions in the locale
• Tracking the location, movement and/or orientation
of an object over time
• Obtaining more representative information through deployment
of a scalable sensor network
• Acquiring new information through retrofitting low cost and low
power sensor and imaging devices

IoT is an enabler for economic development and improving the quality of life and wellbeing of citizens. If you have an interest in exploring applications for IoT in your organisation we are keen to hear more about your challenges and explore how IoT technologies could address them.

In November CENSIS launched a suite of IoT developer kits designed to help users shape their business case. From November 2019 through to January 2020 we will host a number of hour-long drop in sessions where you can unpack the kit, plug in and start playing – with our help. Keep an eye on our events page for more information.
