"Having grown up and worked in rural areas of the Highlands and Islands, it's a place close to my heart. It's such a blessing to know that the work HIE does is helping our small communities to thrive, and tackle the social, economic and environmental issues small communities can face today - fuel poverty, social housing, employment and working towards a carbon neutral community through renewable energy.
I've been working with HIE for a few months now as a part time Community Development Officer for Great Bernera Community Development Trust. It was great to join the team and be 'handed the baton' so to speak on one or two initial projects such as a new housing development for Bernera and a Welcome Information Pack for new and existing residents.
I'm very lucky to work with a positive team of people who are so passionate about bringing projects to fruition, even if that has sometimes meant years of slow steps moving forward, as is the case with the buy out. That takes a lot of dedication and commitment on everyone’s part and inspires me to push on and help the Trust realise some of the future visions for our community. What also amazes me in this job is the willingness and friendliness our local networks, and the sharing of information between other island Trust groups and our local Council. We're all coming across similar problems and experiences so it makes sense to work together and help each other."
