Broadband in the Western Isles

"broadband - a generic term for high speed digital internet connections."

The internet and global communications has a huge potential impact on the way we live and work, how we access information and how we interact. One of the biggest barriers to exploiting the opportunities offered by the Internet is the speed and connection with which we can access it. Broadband offers faster ways of working with 'always on' access, fixed costs and increased efficiency as well as opening up potential new areas of work.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise has been awarded £2,575,000 towards the cost of the £5,150,000 project which includes Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles NHS and HIE Innse Gall. The funding was announced on the 15th of January by the Scottish Executive as one of a number of projects to receive funding from the Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme. The project partners are at an advanced stage of planning the wireless network with over 900 potential business and domestic subscribers already registered through the web site at http://www.connectedcommunities.co.uk
