HIE was an active and core-funder of the Highland Rail Partnership (HRP), which has now merged with HITRANS. We continue to work with Transport Scotland and HITRANS on the development and implementation of new regional and national rail strategies.

Highland rail reports 2006 These reports were commissioned by HIE in partnership with the regional transport partnership, HITRANS, and Highland Rail Partnership, in order to inform the National Rail Strategy regarding future rail traffic growth and infrastructure requirements for the Highland rail network.Rail report 2004 A commissioned research report based on interviews with rail passengers and rail freight users.Rail study '03 Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in conjunction with Highland Rail Partnership, commissioned this independent research which was undertaken between January and March 2003.
