Developing rail services

HIE is working to improve rail services across the region for both passengers and freight. We are an active member and core-funder of the Highland Rail Partnership (HRP), and also work directly with our partners in HITRANS, the Scottish Executive and relavant local authorities to this end.

Along with the Scottish Executive, Highland Council and HRP, HIE funded the 'Invernet' project, which from December 2005 provided a new commuter rail service from Kingussie, Aviemore and Carrbridge to Inverness, and increased service frequencies between Tain, Invergordon, Dingwall and Inverness.

We continue to work with HITRANS and the Scottish Executive on the development and implementation of new regional and national rail strategies, as well as supporting initiatives such as 'Invernet 2' (enhanced services between Elgin and Inverness), and the opening of new rail stations at Conon Bridge and Dalcross.

The following pages links to some recent reports commissioned by HIE with respect to rail services.
