Let the internet take the strain out of training

Fitting in training – especially at the height of the season – is not always easy. But instead of going for training, why not let the training come to you?

For a few mouse clicks are all that stands between you and a host of online courses. An internet-enabled computer and your time are the only requirements to access the free e-learning training.

The most popular and best known is the Scottish Centre of Tourism’s 'Tourism eLearning' website. Part of the Robert Gordon University campus, the Scottish Centre of Tourism has received a lot of positive feedback since its launch in 2004.

The course, which is completed at the student’s own pace, consists of 15 skills sections which focus on key areas including achieving a work-life balance; time management; delegation skills and leadership skills. Each section combines reading, interactive activities, self-reflection opportunities and signposting to additional resources and courses - if desired.

Designed with owner/managers in the Scottish tourism industry in mind, Tourism eLearning provides an opportunity to develop relevant skills without having to leave your desk. On successfully mastering each section, there is a completion certificate to out and add to a continuing professional development (cpd) portfolio.

More specialised in focus are the online learning courses developed by Tourist Board Training. They currently offer three remote learning packages, Scotland, Yours to Discover, Cairngorms Connections Online, and Ancestral Tourism Training Online.

Scotland, Yours to Discover was developed in partnership with LearnDirect Scotland. This course lets you learn more about Scotland, its history and geography, and put your knowledge to the test. Download the PDF brochure

Cairngorms Connections Online, meanwhile, is for anyone working in the tourism and hospitality industry that comes into contact with visitors wishing to learn about the Cairngorms National Park. Download the PDF brochure

The newcomer is Ancestral Tourism Training Online, a course which features video clips and images, interactivity and a discussion board. Download the PDF brochure

Though online learning may seem slightly impersonal, the big plus is that the training can fit around you and your business, not the other way round.
