Rest and relaxation at the Boath House Hotel near Auldearn
The one constant in tourism is change. People’s tastes and aspirations alter over time, and so tourism operators have to evolve too to supply new and emerging markets.

In recent years, there has been a substantial boom in health and well-being holidays and short breaks. It would be wrong, however, to assume that this new popularity only affects operators of health farms and spas. Increasingly, guests in “mainstream” hotels are also expecting to find some level of spa facility on offer.

Typically, guests in search of health and well-being are cash-rich, but time poor and want to feel good in a short space of time. With the Highlands and Islands’ reputation for tranquillity and natural beauty, it’s already a good part of the way in exploiting this lucrative and growing market.

The market play for health and well-being is founded on the growing desire to escape the pressures and strains of daily urban life, to pamper one’s self, detox and recapture, for a time at least, a more relaxed and healthy lifestyle.

Hot markets for spa and relaxation-centred holidays are currently Germany, Scandinavia and France.
