STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills play a vital role in our local economy and are an essential to the development of our key sectors such as life sciences and energy.

STEM North of Scotland is an initiative, led by HIE, aimed at increasing the number of people with qualifications in these subject areas to ensure our future workforce has the necessary skills and information about the opportunities available to them in the Highlands and Islands.

The STEM North of Scotland team has three main jobs:

  • We help find resources, activities and opportunities for teachers  to use to enrich the curriculum in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and technology.
  • We coordinate a network of more than 400 STEM Ambassadors to connect young people with industry and give them a valuable insight into the world of work.
  • We start up new projects, sometimes in partnership with national organisations, sometimes with schools or colleges to inspire and excite young people about STEM subjects.

All activities are driven by the Highlands and Islands STEM Partnership which is made up of all six local authorities, Skills Development Scotland, UHI and the Open University.
