Frequently asked Questions

What qualifications do I need to become a Modern Apprentice or Skillseeker?

No qualifications are necessary. It is more important for an employer to employ the right person for their business. It is important that you are on time, show enthusiasm to learn and work hard. Some jobs require a 'skills test' and others require special skills, an example of this is the care sector. Discuss your strengths with the Careers Advisor to help choose the right career for you.

What qualification will I get and how do I achieve this?

To achieve an SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification), you will have to show your ability and understanding of the job that you are doing. This is usually achieved by gathering a portfolio of evidence and an assessor asking you questions – there are no exams. You have to show that you can perform certain tasks. When you have reached the required standards, the evidence you have gathered is submitted to the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority).

Where do I do my training?

In the work place with your employer or supervisor. SALE will arrange for a training provider to contact your employer to arrange your training. You may also have to attend college for blocks of your training.

What if I don’t like my job or training and how do I know that it is good quality?

Do I have to get a grant or pay any money back?

Your employer pays you a wage of at least sixty pounds per week (the average wage for a sixteen to seventeen year old in Skye and Lochalsh is about eighty to one hundered pounds per week. SALE may contribute towards your daily travel or assist with lodgings if it is not possible to travel daily.

Are there any age limits for modern apprenticeships or skillseekers?

There is no age limit for modern apprentices.  Skillseekers should complete by your twenty-fifth birthday.

How long will it take me to achieve my SVQ?

As long as it takes for you to do your job to the standards required by your industry. Usually about eighteen months to three years – depending on the level of your qualification.
