Skills for businesses or community groups

What help is available?
We can advise you on developing a training plan for your business or organisation.

We can give grants to help businesses and voluntary/community-based organisations in Shetland to train their staff or members.

We can also help develop your staff through Skillseekers or Modern Apprenticeship programmes.

We can give you advice on the Investors in People standard, European Foundation Quality Model (EFQM), Hospitality Assured, and other business improvement tools, plus provide an Advisor to help take you through the whole process.

We are unable to assist with further or higher education costs and in most cases, with training that is legislative in its nature i.e. training that the company must do to comply with the law.

What training is eligible?
To qualify for assistance, training must be linked to the objectives of your business. Assistance is available towards the costs of helping employees attain nationally recognised vocational qualifications such as Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs), as well as for part-time, open/distance learning or short courses. Training should meet industry standards and wherever possible, be certificated or lead to a nationally recognised vocational qualification.

Particular importance is given to training related to increasing supervisory and managerial skills.

Who can apply?
All small and medium sized businesses, self-employed people, voluntary organisation or community groups based in Shetland.

How much will I get?
Our assistance is discretionary, but in recent years the average grant ranges from 25% to 35% of the eligible costs. These include course fees, travel (at economy or saver fares), accommodation and course materials.

It is essential that you contact us before you start, as assistance cannot be given in retrospect.

Funding of up to 100% maybe available for the achievement of SVQ’s through the Skillseeker and Modern Apprenticeship programmes.

How long does it take?
We aim to process your application as quickly as possible. However, the time taken often depends on the information you are able to provide us with – the sooner you give us the information we need, the sooner we can help you.

General
From time to time we are able to identify training needs which are common to a number of organisations, or to a specific sector. We can take on a co-ordinating role and arrange training for these organisations, ideally ensuring that this is delivered locally.
