Shetland is a group of over 100 islands lying on the 60th parallel some 200 miles north of Aberdeen. Despite the constraints of the harsh geographic environment, extreme peripherality and high transport costs, the local economy - revolving around fish and oil - is remarkably robust.

However, changes are imminent and it will require a great deal of effort to ensure that new businesses, particularly in tourism and teleworking, continue to emerge and that our traditional industries remain competitive.

Progress by co-operation has been Shetland's strength in the past and it has never been more important than now. HIE Shetland is here to ensure that organisations and individuals continue to work together in the most effective way into the twenty-first century.
