Road fuel supply

In February 2008, HIE commissioned Experian Catalist to undertake a review of road fuel supply arrangements in the Highlands and Islands, in partnership with HITRANS and the Highland Council.

TheĀ work was completed in October 2009 and reports can be downloaded from this page:

1. The Part 1 (Current Situation) report includes an assessment of all fuel retail sites in the region, the differences in fuel prices experienced in rural and island areas, and changes in consumer behaviour.

2. Two related reports have also been completed, which evaluate the potential impact of the UK RTFO (Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation) on road fuel supply in the region, particularly with respect to the introduction of E5 biogasoline / bioethanol.

3. Working Paper 1 assesses recent trends in the numbers of filling stations in the region and implications for future provision.

4. Working Paper 2 evaluates the potential impacts of future closures of filling stations.

5. Working Paper 3 considers some possible options to improve the viability of rural filling stations.
