A9 road at Tomatin

Research commissioned by HIE and delivered in July 2006 assessed the complementarity of proposals to upgrade road and rail links in the Inverness - Perth corridor.

The objectives of this research was to assess the extent to which road and rail schemes proposed for the corridor are complimentary rather than competitive. This involved consideration of:

  • Markets for road and rail travel in the corridor and the extent to which there is overlap between them.
  • Level and purpose of generated, rather than diverted, trips forecast under both schemes.
  • Extent of environmental benefit where modal shift is predicted under the rail proposal.
