2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology
What was it?
The Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology ran throughout 2017. Work built on the momentum generated by the previous years of Innovation, Architecture and Design, Food and Drink and Homecoming Scotland.
This themed year, along with the previous themed years, was aimed at supporting and driving the nation’s tourism and events sector and celebrated our country’s unique history and heritage. For HIE, our clients and our region, it also offered an opportunity to raise awareness of some of our greatest assets and our hidden gems.
History and heritage is already a key motivator for visits to Scotland and the Highlands and Islands, and an important part of the visitor experience. As part of the year’s celebrations, the aim was to create and expand opportunities for locals and visitors to participate and engage with event activity celebrating one or more of the themes.
The Highlands and Islands is rich in history, heritage and archaeology - from World Heritage Sites to ancient monuments, listed buildings to historic battlefields, cultural traditions to our myths, stories and legends.
Who was involved?
The Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology was a Scottish Government initiative led by VisitScotland, and supported by partners; Creative Scotland, Scottish Tourism Alliance, Scottish Enterprise, The National Trust for Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Heritage Lottery Fund, Museums Galleries Scotland, Built Environment Forum Scotland, Heritage Tourism Group and Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland.
What was the aim of the themed year?
The themed year aimed to:
- Raise the profile of Scotland, showcasing our distinctive history, heritage and archaeology with a co-ordinated marketing and communications programme.
- Encourage and develop opportunities for the key themes of the year within the tourism and events sectors.
- Inspire the people of Scotland and our visitors to participate in activity developed for the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, with particular emphasis on attracting new audiences and spreading engagement across the country.
- Encourage collaborative working between the sectors represented by Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology themes and wider tourism sector.
- Encourage tourism businesses and the wider business community to engage with the year and capitalise on opportunities by developing new products and services, and growing existing business.
