HIE Orkney - service sector policy

We are often asked why we cannot assist businesses which operate in the service sector of the economy.

The reason behind this policy (similar policies operate throughout the Highlands & Islands Enterprise network) is that these businesses are usually in direct competition with other similar businesses serving the same, limited local market.

We are unable to use our funds to distort the fair competition which exists in the local marketplace and therefore do not become involved in service sector businesses unless a business is going to provide a service which was not previously available within Orkney and which there is a local demand for.
