Investors in people

The Investors in People programme helps businesses to make the most of their staff, their most valuable asset, by improving planning, strengthening communications, identifying training needs, etc.  This is particularly valuable to Orkney businesses where unemployment is low and key staff are difficult to replace.

Specialised advisers work with HIE Orkney to help guide businesses through the process of committing to and becoming recognised as an Investor in People.

This national standard provides a flexible framework which is responsive to the needs of individual businesses and organisations.  Those working with the standard are introduced to the four defining principles, namely:

Commitment
Investors in People are fully committed to supporting the development of their people to achieve their aims and objectives.

Planning
Investors in People are clear about their aims and objectives and what their people need to do to achieve them.

Action
Investors in People develop their people effectively in order to improve performance.

Evaluation
Investors in People understand the impact of their people on their performance.

Businesses and organisations can benefit in a number of ways.  They will have:

  • a flexible plan which sets out clear objectives and targets
  • staff who understand how they contribute to the achievement of the goals and targets
  • more efficient use of training resources
  • improved internal communication
  • improved processes which can have a variety of results eg increased productivity, reduced wastage, improved morale, greater profitability and higher customer satisfaction.
