Excellence in Education through Business Links
|
Are you interested in meeting the people who know your future employees? Would you like to have a working relationship with schools and be able to engage with tomorrow’s workforce? Could you help change the stereotypes about your industry? Excellence in Education through Business Links (EEBL) was developed to try and narrow the gap between school and industry and integrate more labour market information within the curriculum. Educating teachers and allowing them hands on experience in industry can help change their misconceptions and those of their pupils regarding work sectors and job opportunities. In Orkney there are 269 teachers delivering the curriculum to the future workforce. Many of these teachers have limited experience of the business world and more importantly, how their subject is directly linked to the jobs that exist within different industries. It is hard for teachers to find the time to inform themselves about new developments and trends or what current entry requirements are and often by the time pupils see a guidance teacher their minds are made up - and stereotypes about jobs can be hard to change. By hosting placements for teachers you can help to create vital links and get the opportunity to inform teachers and provide them with resources they can use in the classroom. A placement must last a minimum of two days but these need not be consecutive. A flexible programme as well as objectives for the participating teacher(s) is agreed in advance. In return, long term, there will be a better educated workforce and a skilled pool of potential employees. As part of their professional development teachers have to commit 35 hours of their working year to professional development and Excellence in Education through Business Links helps them to achieve this. More information is available on HIE’s and Careers Scotland’s web pages.
