If the caller asks you whether someone is available they might say the following:

Am faod mi a bhruidhinn ri...	May I speak to...
A bheil Catrìona NicAoidh a-staigh?	Is Catriona MacKay in?
A bheil Màiri anns an oifis?	Is Màiri in the office?

In reply you could ask them to hold on while you find out. Here's how:

Faodaidh/Chan Fhaod	You may/You may not
Tha/Chan eil	Yes/No
Fuirichibh mionaid.	Wait a moment, please.
Chì mi a bheil e/i a-staigh.	I'll see if he/she is in.
