Electronic commerce, or e-business, has been described as the fulfilment of every small and medium-sized business’s dream.

Particularly for those at the so-called geographical peripheries of major markets, in areas such as the Highlands and Islands, doing business on-line over the World Wide Web offers the ability to demolish the distance barrier.

Customer and supplier relationships can become much closer and more timely; new markets can be just a mouse click away.

Combined with their existing business systems, there is huge potential for small businesses to capture customer data, refine and tailor the products and services they offer, speed up order fulfilment, and build market share and customer loyalty - in much the same way as companies many times their size.
