Squadron Leader, Alan Maclennan

“Once you’ve made the decision to leave, just go for it. It takes time, but it will come good. Building up networks is very important when you’re looking for work outside, and use the support agencies who are waiting to help you.”

Alan Maclennan was with the RAF for 21 years before leaving in 2004; as an engineer at Squadron Leader level he was responsible for 140 staff. His new appointment is as the Highlands and Islands’ first representative for the DDA (Defence Diversification Agency).

“The DDA is essentially a technology transfer operation which enables small to medium companies and the MOD to get in touch with each other and explore possibilities for product development. My role is to broker opportunities and get the right people talking to each other.”

Since leaving, he has had two previous jobs, including RAF Task Force Team Leader for HIE Moray. “My current position was advertised internally by the MOD,” he says. “I sent my CV in, and they picked me up as a wild card outsider – which came up trumps!”

Alan made his decision to leave the RAF after a working life that involved a lot of moving around. “Eventually, I had to put a stake in the ground for the sake of my family.” Despite the fact that the process of adjusting to civilian life was initially daunting, he has no regrets. “I miss the camaraderie of forces life, but I’ve been able to draw on my experience and knowledge and start something new.”
