Highlands and Islands Enterprise, working in conjunction with Shetland Islands Council, Orkney Islands Council and Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, commissioned Xero Energy to consider the grid and regulatory issues impacting on the development of renewable energy generation projects on and around the Scottish Islands.

The report discusses key barriers and offers some potential solutions, some of which may be implemented in the near term and others which will require longer term action.

This report follows-on from one published earlier in 2007 by HIE - which looked at grid connection options for the island groups and which noted the complexities surrounding island grid connections.
