The area defined as South Loch Ness contains a number of small settlements including Dores, Errogie, Farr, Foyers, Gorthleck, Inverfarigaig and Whitebridge.
The landscape varies from gently undulating terrain in the north and west to mountainous areas, upland moor and remoter glens elsewhere. It contains some exceptional locations with views through Loch Ness and the Great Glen.
The economy has suffered in the past from retrenchment in traditional forestry, hydro-electric and estate activities and the closure of the British Aluminium works at Foyers 30 years ago. The current economy is dependent on tourism, hydro-electricity generation, farming/crofting and forestry but due to limited employment opportunities locally many residents commute to Inverness.
The upgrading and expansion of visitor accommodation and recreation facilities based on existing establishments are considered to be important to sustaining economic activity. |
