Social inclusion

HIE Inverness and East Highland contributes match funding for a number of projects that receive funding through the European Social Fund (ESF)

These are aimed at helping people who are disadvantaged in a number of ways, for example, physical disabilities, mental disabilities, long-term unemployed, women returners etc., to engage in training and development which will help them enter or re-enter the world of work.

Training is available in skills ranging from basic construction, information technology, childcare, radio broadcasting, supported employment and assisting women into business and public life.

Merkinch Development Ventures is a new social enterprise initiative.  It has been set up to allow local people to take on the shared responsibility of creating employment opportunities and developing  their local community.  Those involved so far are working towards a commercial co-operative and charitable venture that has ethical and life affirming values.  It also reflects the liveliness, community spirit and solidarity that is the Merkinch.
