Inverness (population 66,000) commands a strategic position where the Great Glen meets the Moray Firth. Located at the mouth of the River Ness, the City of Inverness is flanked by rising land towards Craig Phadrig and Drumossie Muir.Inverness has experienced significant and sustained growth over 30 years, during which time the city has expanded some 2-3km from its centre.

The city's High Street provides an attractive, pedestrian-friendly shopping environment.  Flower baskets and international buskers add colour and music, and there is easy access to some of the town's main landmarks, including Inverness Castle and the River Ness walkways.

For the future development of the historic city centre, the Inverness City-Vision focuses on continuing enhancement to help create a busting, chic '25-hour' city centre for the enjoyment of residents and to attract visitors and encourage them to return again and again.

As the major tourism gateway to the Highlands, Inverness continues to record 1.5 to 2 million short-stay visitor bed-nights per year.

The Longman is the city’s principal trading estate although the Carse, Beechwood, Inshes and West Seafield have significant small business, retail and business developments.Inverness College, based in the Longman, is one of the key colleges in the University of Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute.
