Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus (population 600) is the principal service centre in the southern part of the area.

Local facilities have been consolidated with the provision of a medical centre and fire station.

The economy is heavily dependent on the seasonal tourist trade, with the Benedictine Abbey and the Caledonian Canal being key attractions. Securing a future for the Abbey is vital to rejuvenating the village and securing long term recovery following retraction of hydro-electric and forestry activity. This is a Category A Listed Building of national importance set in 8.7 hectares of landscaped grounds at the heart of the Conservation Area.

A partnership of agencies, together with the owner, wishes to pursue a joint marketing and conservation plan for the Abbey. Future uses may include visitor-heritage, community-residential or business, or a mix of compatible activities.
