Delivering economic and social development to the Western Isles, (often known as the Outer Hebrides) HIE Innse Gall must operate with cognisance of key factors such as the stabilisation of the declining population, and the opportunities afforded locally and by international markets |
The natural and environmental capital of the islands’ is a strong base for the significant fish and shellfish processing industries in the area, and creates unique niche opportunities when it comes to marketing the Western Isles as a tourist destination. This resource is a further tool in the area becoming a global player in renewable energy generation and technology, and the associated manufacturing and support prospects. The use of IT and telecommunication applications, together with a high degree of computer literacy have encouraged a growing number of independent teleworkers, and a network of remote back office and support centre activities. This enables people to live local and work global. In financial terms the Western Isles Economy is estimated at £221 million or £7,827 per head in terms of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), with the main sectors being public services and administration; distribution; fishing/fish farming; agriculture; health and education. WIE continues to aid businesses to develop and grow and address the challenge of the area's perceived remoteness. |
