How it operates:

With the aim of assisting projects that can help fragile communities to develop sustainable economic and social opportunities, 2 projects which received CED assistance are detailed here:

Six musicians, from the Ness and Point areas of Lewis, were backed with a £900 grant to go to Aig Baile, a cultural workshop event organised by the Highlands and Islands Society of London (HISL). The local  Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES) councillor, also attended the event on behalf of Comunn Eachdraidh Nis, and was able to actively market the area from a stall at the event. CnES also provided matching funding to make this project possible. Among the products she had been able to promote and sell had been locally-originated scarves, magazines and music tapes. The HISL had invited the performers who provided melodeon playing, piping and dancing to be involved in a range of workshops throughout the one-day event and they had got the chance to meet and play music with people from elsewhere.

In Harris, CED assisted Harris Development Ltd (HDL), to provide training for its development officer, Duncan MacPherson, on the management of voluntary organisations. He was enabled to take the course by distance learning from Imperial College, part of London University. The course, has won £300 of backing from HIE Innse Gall and £300 from the CED programme and will provide training in overall management skills.
