Laura, her husband and young son Simon move into an abandoned orphanage where she spent her childhood. Simon soon begins seeing – and then playing with – a group of malicious children, who may or may not be in his imagination. A movie made scary through atmosphere, pacing and storytelling, rather than sudden violence, needless gore and random shocks. Produced by Guillermo ('Pan's Labyrinth') del Toro, it bears some of his visual style and restraint, as well as an abiding interest in the terrors of childhood. |
