Life sciences - sector overview

Life Sciences is a significant growth sector within Scotland which is rapidly developing a reputation for excellence regionally, nationally and globally.

The increasing number of life science businesses based in the Highlands and Islands is confirmation of the region's potential and evidence of Highlands and Islands Enterprise's committed support for the sector.

The Highlands and Islands have strengths in two major sub sectors: natural products (particularly in Argyll and the Western Isles) and P4 Digital Healthcare (activity focussed on the east coast between Elgin and Inverness).

A number of other sectors such as the creative industries, ICT, financial and business services and food and drink are engaging with the life sciences industry in the Highlands and Islands, illustrating the scale of the sector and the potential for business development and collaboration. This is particularly the case within the field of 'P4 Digital Healthcare'. This term is being adopted in the life sciences and digital healthcare sectors to describe the changing healthcare landscape as it becomes more Predictive, Preventative, Personalised and Participatory.

Scotland is ideally placed as a location for leading innovation in healthcare. It has supportive policy environment and a health board specifically tasked with delivering healthcare using digital technology (NHS24). In addition, one for the world's largest deployments of telehealthcare will occur in Scoltand in the form of the TSB programme DALLAS in 2012. There will be three active sites in the Highlands and Islands.
