Promoting the value of Gaelic development
| A key task of CNAG is to promote the value of Gaelic development to the Government, local authorities, business and the population at large - not least the Gaelic speaking population. This task is being tackled on two main fronts - seeking "secure status" through a Gaelic language act and encouraging the development in local communities of "Gaelic energy centres", or spaces where a number of activities can take place unselfconsciously through the medium of Gaelic.
The level to which the once denigrated Gaelic language has risen in popular esteem may be judged by an opinion poll carried out a few years ago by the BBC. The poll revealed that one million people in Scotland, 20 per cent of the population, would like to learn Gaelic. Most will not but it does indicate a substantial level of support. |
