Communities Scotland

Communities Scotland, like Highlands and Islands Enterprise, is a Scottish Executive agency.

Its aim is to work with others to ensure decent housing and strong communities across the whole of Scotland. HIE works closely with Communities Scotland to further this aim.

Purpose of the agreement

The Highlands and Islands of Scotland is an area where, contrary to historical trends, more and more people are choosing to live and work. While there are significant new opportunities presented by the area, there remains a challenging support role for public agencies to maximise these opportunities.

The purpose of this agreement is to set out how the two organisations will deliver economic, physical and community development across the Highlands and Islands Enterprise area - through providing for clarity of roles, co-operation and joint working.

Communities Scotland’s Corporate Plan is set within the context of the Framework Document and the Scottish Executive’s Closing the Opportunity Gap objectives and targets. It is target 'J' which has most resonance for Communities Scotland.

“To regenerate the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods – in order that people living there can take advantage of job opportunities and improve their quality of life.”
