Highlands and Islands Enterprise and HIE Innse Gall commissioned an evaluation of the Sound of Harris ferry service. The research was undertaken between August 2002 and January 2003. The overall objective of the study was to evaluate the social and economic impacts of the service.

Specifically, the research considered:

  • The contribution of the ferry service to the general competitiveness of the Western Isles;
  • The extent to which the nature and scale of the impacts reflect the circumstances of each island and thus the extent to which they can be generalised to other
    islands;
  • Any further or emerging development opportunities for each of the islands in the context of the enhanced transport links.
