Highlands and Islands Enterprise is committed to the growth of life sciences and has invested significantly in the development of state of the art infrastructure, advanced research and development, training and skills, business support and international trade and investment.

The built and natural environment in the Highlands and Islands offers considerable opportunities for the life sciences sector to grow. There are already over 80 active organisations in the region and several new buildings under construction which are specifically tailored for life sciences.

Enterprise Area designation

Locating at the Inverness Campus or the Enterprise Park, Forres will be of particular interest to businesses hoping to capitalise on the Enterprise Area designation, which was awarded by the Scottish Government in 2012.  The status offers added incentives including rates relief of up to £275,000 per business, simplified planning protocols and additional support for training and skills.

The range of life science locations across the Highlands and Islands can provide companies with incubation space, laboratory facilities, and office and commercial space within one of the world’s most scenic destinations.

  • The Enterprise Park Forres

  • Located in Moray the Enterprise Park is proving to be a thriving location for business. Developed by HIE, the Park extends over 100 acre of land offering an excellent working environment, with an inspirational range of high quality business units each flexibly designed for office, lab or light manufacturing space.

  • 25 acres of The Enterprise Park has been awarded enterprise area status for life sciences, offering incentives and benefits from easy planning to rates relief for life sciences companies locating here.
  • Horizon Scotland
  • The innovative business centre, Horizon Scotland located at the Enterprise Park Forres. Horizon offers fully serviced business space with excellent facilities to innovative businesses.
  • Alexander Graham Bell Centre 
  • The £6.5m Alexander Graham Bell Centre in Elgin is now open for research, education and commercialisation of digital healthcare. An example of the region’s collaborative approach, the facility which is a partnership between NHS Grampian and Moray College UHI, opened in December 2013.
  • Inverness Campus
  • One of the most ambitious projects in Scotland, Inverness Campus opened to the public in May 2015. It is a nationally and internationally significant location for business, research and education.

    Developed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Campus occupies 215 acres of prime development land directly connected to 80 acres of an already thriving life sciences community adjacent. Set in stunning parkland the first buildings are complete. The Campus offers a high quality, vibrant location for innovation, business development, collaboration and learning.

  • Centre for Health Science

  • Based in Inverness, is one of the first of its kind in the UK to bring together the public, private and academic sectors to be a focus for excellence in health science and biotechnology.
  • European Marine Science Park
  • The £7.5m first phase of the European Marine Science Park in Oban was completed in 2012.  Situated alongside the Scottish Association of Marine Science, Malin House provides up to 20,000 sq ft of fully flexible laboratory and office space and incorporates marine science, research and development, education and commercial activity.                                           
  • The European Marine Science Park is being developed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), in partnership with Scottish Development International and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) to create a self sustaining and growing cluster of marine science related activity.
