Digital healthcare devices and diagnostics

LifeScan Scotland in Inverness, part of the multinational Johnson and Johnson group, is the largest Life Sciences employer in Scotland with around 1,300 employees. It is a global leader in the design and manufacture of glucose test strips and meters for monitoring diabetes.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has worked closely with LifeScan and its predecessor, Inverness Medical Ltd, since 1995. The start-up of Inverness Medical was made possible with an investment in shares and around £5m in grants for building development by Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

With diabetes now one of the fastest growing medical conditions in the world, Lifescan Scotland is committed to leading the field in researching and developing new products for its customers. In 2009 HIE provided £1.5m assistance to two specific LifeScan projects reinforcing the region's reputation as a key centre for innovation and expertise in diabetes diagnostic techniques.

The presence of LifeScan Scotland in Inverness has stimulated a cluster of expertise in clinical diagnostics leading to the creation of a Highland Diabetes Institute and spin off companies such as SureSensors.

Key factors for businesses in locating to the area include:

  • access to skilled labour market
  • enterprise support and grants
