Expedition philosophyWhen selecting team members, we looked for a combination of factors, the most important of which were an absolute passion for the project, an ability to communicate the message to interested parties (press, public, partners) in a number of different mediums upon return, a diversity of proven expedition-specific skills in remote and hostile environments and an elite level of athlete performance. This expedition will put far greater demands on each individual athlete than any similar expedition previously attempted. Each member needed to have not only incredible physical strength but also a high level of mental toughness in order to have a chance to complete this unique challenge. 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.' - Goethe Environmental philosophyExperts in the field of environmental expedition ethics, the self-designed and trialled expedition ‘field toilet’ is only the starting point for this team. Anna has given numerous talks on expedition ethics and this is a challenging testing environment and a major aim of the expedition will be to devise, test and perfect ways of truly ‘leaving no trace’ during Arctic journeys. The models and practices developed will be a key component of the information disseminated about the expedition. Previous expedition legaciesInformation and technology developed from previously completed inclusive expeditions has been used to enable disabled people (both in Britain and abroad) to experience for the first time the thrill of independent ocean kayaking, hand bicycling and cutting edge research expeditions. Charity fundraisingMoney raised through this expedition will be used to extend the services of Interventure so that as many people as possible can access the power and fulfilment that comes with the ability to travel through the wilderness. Interventurewww.interventure.org.uk is a charity which develops opportunities for disabled people to access wilderness places and outdoor activities. Equal adventure developmentswww.equaladventure.co.uk develops the equipment and ‘know-how’ to enable such opportunities to occur. The type of innovations we have been working with will take outdoor technology to a new level - one of immediate use militarily and one of long term benefit to the wider consumer market. The well known outdoor brands and technology companies involved are already working on adaptations to make similar products available for wider commercial and military buyers. These innovations will have a long term impact on the wider world of extreme travel.
