The articles below examine a number of different aspects of domain names and their management.

Dot TV – the new frontier for business?

Ten years ago, the tiny island state of Tuvalu in the South Pacific struck a lucrative internet deal to rent out one of its national treasures. Now, with the growth of broadband on a global scale, the atoll islanders are set to reap even greater rewards for their prime asset – their dot tv domain extension.

Sounds like domain confusion

A recent fiasco over a sound alike domain name has again reminded web site owners that buying the .co.uk and .com extensions is not necessarily enough to protect their brand and reputation.

Domain name scams

Got a domain name up for renewal in the next month or two? If so, beware of domain name scams that arrive in the post or in your email in-box. For false domain renewal bills are misleading people into paying inflated charges to renew and transfer their domain names to new domain name servers.

Domain email

Hands up anyone who has seen a web site in a newspaper or magazine advert followed by the email address @aol.com or myisp.com instead of the site’s domain.

Rules still apply

Some people like to think of the Internet as an unregulated free-for-all, but this is simply not the case. The law still applies, although in some areas its interpretation and effects are not entirely clear.

The international nature of the Internet, and the ease with which information is copied and transmitted, can lead to additional problems.

This briefing outlines some of the common legal issues you need to be aware of. It covers:

  • The basic rules covering email and the Internet.
  • Contracts, marketing and e-commerce.
  • Intellectual property.
  • Privacy and data protection.
