Broadband security

Due to its ‘always on’ nature, broadband does increase the risk posed by hackers and viruses. However, by taking a few simple measures it is possible to minimise this risk.

Ensure your firewall is switched on. In Windows XP, go Start/Control Panel/Security Center and check that the firewall is on. With a router, you have an instant belt and braces job as there’s a built-in firewall in the router too.

Also, keep anti-virus software up to date by checking the automatic updates option. Ditto with Microsoft Update. And scan regularly with anti-spyware.
