A leading manufacturer of timber frames in Elgin is building on 20 years of solid business foundations with expansion plans for a greener future.
The Roof Truss Company (RTC Timber Systems) has recently introduced a new line of low-carbon products. It is working with Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to look at how it can best tap into growth opportunities in the market.
For many years, RTC Timber Systems has manufactured high specification I-beam kits for both house building and commercial developments. Their experience in this has led to their development of a revolutionary new 'Passive Wall' factory insulated panel. This is designed to keep buildings warm in winter but cool in summer using environmentally sustainable technologies.
HIE has approved almost £40,000 towards a marketing development programme to promote this environmentally friendly product.
"We started out making roof trusses 20 years ago, and over time have diversified to meet the needs of customers. With HIE's support we are investing in promoting and delivering zero carbon products. Much of the passive wall system can be made out of locally sourced parts, including I-beams manufactured in Forres, cladding boards from Inverness and prefabricated panels which will be manufactured in Elgin," said Bill Beaton, director at RTC Timber Systems.
He added: "In addition to the passive wall system being used in the very first 'passive' low energy house in Scotland it has also been selected as the building system for three of the houses being built at the forthcoming Highland Expo in Inverness. The system has also achieved highly commended at the self build product innovation awards.
"Our reputation for good workmanship, our innovative attitude to product range and our environmental credentials are all important to us and we are excited at the opportunities that this new direction will create. We appreciate the ongoing help we have had from HIE. As part of the process of creating our growth plan we have had support, for instance, with marketing advice. We are also planning the best ways to increase our turnover and expand our plant and equipment."
RTC Timber Systems is a one of 350 growing businesses and social enterprises from across the region which HIE has been building an on-going client relationship with over the past two years. The aim is to create development plans which will have positive outcomes for businesses and their communities. The closer working relationship and shared goals mean that HIE support can flow from the needs of the business.
Keira Orme, the HIE development manager working with RTC, commented: "This is an excellent example of the kind of innovative business that HIE works with. This project will not only benefit RTC Timber System's existing customers but will also mean they can attract new ones. This is an ambitious business, as shown by their commitment and investment to moving forward with new technology. We are delighted to be able to support their efforts to strengthen and grow."
