Four tourism businesses in the Highlands and Islands have been crowned as the best performing Green businesses in Scotland.
The recognition by the Green Tourism Business Scheme is for the top class efforts the four made during 2007. They are:
· Evergreen Bed and Breakfast, at Inverfarigaig by Loch Ness
· Loch Ossian Youth Hostel, at Fort William
· Blue Reef Cottages, of Harris
· and Arran’s Glenartney guest house.
The awards - based on energy performance, Green grading and efforts as Green ambassadors for sustainable tourism - were announced at VisitScotland expo 2008.
Fiona Ambrose, of Evergreen B&B, said: “We are delighted that our continuing efforts to both conserve and promote the environment have been recognised. We encourage our guests to really experience the local area and by giving practical advice help them to appreciate the environment around them."
Neil Campbell, of Blue Reef Cottages, said: “By making a conscious effort to reduce our utility bills, we were able to significantly reduce our energy and water costs.
“In addition, we offset our footprint by planting 3,500 broadleaf trees to create a wildlife area.”
