Community turbines wanted!

Community turbines wanted!
24 February 2008

Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company (HICEC) is supporting a number of communities to develop their own small scale renewable energy projects. One advanced project is in the Western Isles, where the North Harris Trading Company (NHTC) is developing a windfarm of 2.5MW capacity. NHTC  was recently successful in obatining full planning consent and has already secured a grid connection agreement for 2.5MW export

David Cameron of NHTC said  “We are over the moon to hear that  our development now has full planning permission.  This renewable energy project will substantially reduce our carbon emissions and it will help North Harris re-establish itself as a thriving, vibrant community.”

NHTC is considering the option of using good second-hand wind turbines, a policy that proved successful with the Gigha community windfarm in Argyll.

NHTC is particularly interested in machines with the following characteristics:

· Designed for high wind sites, IEC Class IA or equivalent
· Individual rated capacity 600kW to 1.3MW
· From a major manufacturer still available to offer spares and service
· In good condition, preferably still operating but , for example, due to be repowered
